Don’t Do This with a Kettlebell!

by: Fernando Bernall, DOM, AP, CPT

If you follow this type of Kettlebell instruction, guess who the “Biggest Loser” will be? This vid came from fitprosarah.com

On the one hand, I’m glad Kettlebells got some exposure on a prime-time, national TV show. On the other hand, I’m sadden by the demonstration that Jillian gave. It was really bad. Now, I’m not sure how many people went and got a kettlebell the next day as a result of her demo. But one think I’m sure of: people are going to get hurt if they practice KB the way she demonstrated. Fortunately, she was using a wimpy 6 lbs kettlebell. Which is why she was able to get away with such poor body alignments. But if anyone bought say a 20 lbs kettlebell, and tries to use it the way Jillian demonstrated, you can be sure of one thing, someone is going to get hurt.

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of proper usage of Kettlebells. I also must drive home the point that if you are going to derive any benefit from KBs, then you need to use heavier KBs. A 6 lbs, or a 10 lbs. KB is not going to get the results a heavier KB will. It is fine to start with a light KB. But within a couple of weeks, that’s right, a couple of weeks of good training, you should be moving up to heavier KBs. Not only will heavier KBs help burn more fat and improve in overall cardiovascular conditioning, but some techniques can only be learned with heavier KBs.

I agree with you. In the first place, the reason why we are using Kettle Bells is to burn our fats. So it should be a heavier KB’s but with the proper body mechanics coz it might create an injury to your part.
