Tai Chi Pole Work for Push Hands - Part II

by: Fernando Bernall, DOM, AP, CPT

Three components make up the Tai Chi Pole Work practice. One is the moving, circle walking, palm changing routine you saw on Part I. The second component includes the martial application of the routines and the third, the one on this video, covers the Zhan Zhuang or Standing Post practice of the training.

This type of Standing Post practice, is usually learned after the practitioner has already invested a considerable amount of time practicing empty handed. This is the same idea behind learning the spear, the staff, sword, or any other weapon found in Tai Chi. First spend several years doing empty hand training and then later pick up a tool

The tree trunk I’m using on the video, I found by the river and it was very heavy. The shape of the trunk made it more difficult to keep it resting on my arms. This type of training strengthens the tendons, bones and all connective tissue in general. Equally important, it teaches the practitioner to relax under pressure.

As in the previous video, all flaws are mine and not a reflection of Master Sun’s teachings.
