- I’m a Senior. Can I train with Kettlebells?
Yes you can! Kettlebell training can be used by anyone regardless of age. That said, we should keep in mind that as we get older, we need to pay more attention to lubrication of the joints through proper joint mobility exercises. These are not necessarily warm up exercises; although you will feel warmed after the drills. The purpose is to lubricate the joints with synovial fluid (the joints W2 oil).. And, if you chose to stretch, avoid static stretching and chose dynamic stretching instead.. The former should be done after exercise and the latter prior to exercise in order to prepare the body to work out!
- Will I get bulky like a man?
No. Women do not have enough testosterone to build muscles like men do. Unless you take anabolic steroids, there is no way to bulk up like a man.. Instead, you will become very toned and well defined with an overall better body composition.
- With what weight kettlebell should I start training?
Naturally, this depends on your current level of fitness and experience with free weights. Generally, women should start with a weight that facilitates proper form and technique. Most ladies do well with a 8kg or 17.6 lbs kettlebell. Once proper execution of technique is accomplished on the basic kettlebell drills, she can easily move up to a 12 kg or 26.4 lbs. kettlebell. As you progress in your training, you will always find use for the lighter kettlebells you started with when practicing new drills or after a time off from training.
Men can generally start with a 16 kg or 35.2 lbs kettlebell. However, a lighter bell such as a 26.4 lbs, can come handy when practicing new drills..
- Are Kettlebells all I need to become fit?
Ah, a good question.. The answer can be a yes, or a no. It primarily depends on your fitness goals, amount of space available and how much time you can devote to fitness. If time is limited as well as space and all one wishes is to be in fairly good condition, then, yes, a few kettlebells will do the trick. However, if one wishes to address all ten components of fitness, then kettlebells will play an adjunct role in a wider repertoire of training methods. I think that a good combination of calisthenics, kettlebells, traditional resistance training, and some martial arts training will just about meet all fitness components. An eclectic approach to training will keep the athlete from becoming bored, or to become injured from overusing the same routines.
- Can children train with kettlebells?
Frankly, other than the monkey bars, I can’t think of a better tool to bring our youth into shape than Kettlebells.. Obesity amongst American children is reaching to epidemic proportions. If there has ever been a time when physical fitness for our youth should be at the forefront of our concerns, it is now. Kettlebells are a great tool for kids because they are FUN to work with. Our youth fitness program includes kettlebells, tons of calisthenics and Chinese martial arts.
- Why should I attend a workshop?
Kettlebell training requires an understanding of some basic movement patterns in order to train safely. These 4 hour introduction workshops address the basic requirements every student should have prior exercising with Kettlebells.
- How can I integrate Kettlebells into my own program?
Wow! Great question! This could take an entire article. Kettlebells can easily integrate into any system of training. The key, I think, is to keep the system as the priority during training and kettlebells as tools for skill refinement.. For example: If I wished to improve on my rooting skills with kettlebells, I may practice the “Farmer’s Walk”. For explosive, yet controlled, hip power, one may practice some “cleans”.
The key is to always think about ground power. The force and velocity that can be generated by the heels and the transference of that force into the hands and vice versa. The ease with which ground force travels through the body. In other words, the best possible muscle/skeletal alignment that requires the least amount of eccentric contraction. In essence then, “relaxation”..
The same idea can be applied to yoga, pilates, dance, qi gong and so on..
I’ll write more on this later..
- Can I wear my IPod?
Hmmmm. No! Kettlebell sessions are not like your regular gym workout with hard rock, heavy metal music or aerobic music going to 96 beats per minute. We are into mind-muscle connection. Not just working a sweat. Most injuries in the gym happen during classes taught to music. Participants are more into keeping up with the music and lose sight of the work at hand. Sorry.
